The ABCs
Letter Identification
We begin our curriculum with an overview of the alphabet. We will use the program called Fundations to identify and correctly write the capital and lowercase letters. We write our letters starting at the top line!
Strategies you can use at home:
Flashcards for both capital and lowercase letters
Memory Game:
Match capital to capital (T, T); lowercase to lowercase (a, a);
Match capital and lowercase letter flashcards (B, b)
Make the letters using play dough, wiki sticks, or writing the letter in sand
Letter Hunt: Find the letters in books, on signs, on cereal boxes, etc.
Put the letters in alphabetical order using magnetic letters
Sing the alphabet song and point to each letter
Letter/Sound Correspondence
We also focus on letter/sound correspondence. The students will soon begin writing words using the sounds they have learned!
Strategies you can use at home:
Say a letter out loud and have your child state the sound
Using a letter flashcard, hold up a letter and have your child state the sound
See how many words your child/family can say that begin with a certain sound
Cut out pictures from a magazine. Have your child state the name of the picture outloud, identify the first sound, and then state the letter that makes that sound
Begin to slowly say each sound in a short three letter word, and have your child write the word
