Numbers, Numbers, Numbers
This year, the students will be introduced to many math topics using our math series, Bridges. At the beginning of each unit, I will send home a Home/School Connection Newsletter that will have great games and tips to use at home!
Strategies to use at home:
Number Identification:
Flashcards
Write a numeral and have your child tell you what it is
State a numeral out loud and have your child write it down (Remember to start at the top!)
Look for numerals on signs, in books, on license plates, etc.
Counting:
Count out loud: Ask your child: "How many steps does it take to walk to the mailbox?'; "How many seconds does it take to put on your jacket?"
Count sets of objects: toys, crayons, spoons, bugs, etc. **Remember to touch each object as you count it outloud.
Count a set of objects and write the numeral of how many in the set
Writing Numerals:
Write the numerals 1 through 20 ***Remember to start at the top
Order the numerals:
Using flashcards, place the numerals in order
Play a number game in the car: Have your child find the numbers 0 through 9 on signs, license plates, etc. Count backwards as well!
Adding: Begin to add sets of objects together. Your child may draw a picture of each problem below or use the actual objects.
Ask your child, "How many forks and spoons are there altogether?"; "How many blue socks and green socks are there in all?:
Subtracting: Begin with a whole set of objects and then take some away. Your child may draw a picture of each problem below or use the actual objects.
Ask your child, "We have 5 balls, but 2 bounce away. How many balls are left?"; "We have 4 cars, but 3 cars drive away. How many cars are left?"
